a new tradition

A few months ago I was reading a blog about a family of thirteen (WOW!) who’s made a tradition of eating pizza and watching a movie together every Saturday night.  (Or was it Friday?  I don’t remember.  Anyway…)

I’ve never been very good at creating and keeping traditions in our family.  Maybe because it’s oftentimes a lot of work and I’m just lazy?  I don’t know for sure, but when I read about the pizza and movie night tradition, it seemed like something I could handle.  And then I started imagining my kiddos in the future, all in their teens, picking out a movie and helping me make pizza…and of course I got a little teary eyed. :)   (Of course, I can’t be sure my kids will still think their Baba and I are “all that” ten years from now, but I can hope!)

We’ve kept it up for two months now, and the kids are starting to ask about “eat pizza watch movie night” whenever the weekend rolls around.  Sometimes we order Dominos, sometimes we pick up a Papa Murphy’s pizza, and sometimes we make our own.  Last weekend the kids had a blast helping make individual pizzas with my favorite biscuit dough recipe (which I need to share sometime–it’s so yummy!)

I raided the fridge for all possible pizza toppings–half a jar of spaghetti sauce, chopped veggies, cheese, bacon.  (The kids enjoyed picking out their own toppings, but I think their favorite part was playing in the flour.) :)

The mini pizzas turned out pretty and quite tasty!

That evening we watched Gulliver’s Travels.  Some of our other movie night picks have included Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins, Bambi, Tangled, and Shaolin Soccer.  (Yes, our kids LOVE kung fu movies!)

Boulder’s included in the tradition too (although he gets a back row seat in his high chair!)

Do you have any family traditions?  Please share…I just might try it out with our family (as long as it’s not too much work!) ;)

That is one of our traditions too! But the day of the week depends on the season – on soccer games or whatever. It is the only night we all watch tv and eat in the living room. We have had the tradition for years and very much appreciate that Nan is getting older because we are enjoying the movies more! (and there is less food on the floor). My parents did this with us (except it wasn’t always pizza sometimes it was just popcorn or on special occasions it was Chinese take-out!) We had a special blanket that we spread on the floor and all got our pillows. Thanks for reminding me that even eating in the living room is a special family tradition!

Yes, I’m looking forward to less food on the floor! :) I’m amazed at how much the kids already look forward to it at their young age. Really makes me want to keep it up!
